Young Stars exerted early pressure on the White Hart rear guard but they did not take advantage of three penalty corner awards in the opening twelve minutes. It took until the 21st minute for them to break the deadlock when Edward Hughes pushed home from close range to send his team into a 1 – 0 lead. Although Young Stars dominated proceedings they were unable to break down the White Hart defence, the half time whistle blowing with the score unchanged.
After White Hart did not avail themselves of a couple of penalty corners early in the second half, on 49 minutes Christian Bonello shot Young Stars 2 – 0 ahead. On 55 minutes Nathan Galea rounded the White Hart’s custodian and slotted home his side’s number three. On 60 minutes Elton Cutajar netted Young Stars fourth and on 65 minutes Galea extended his side’s tally scoring his second and Young Stars’ fifth just before the final whistle sounded.
Coach Raymond Micallef had a selection headache before this match as he had several first team players missing. There were 3 new players in the starting line-up with Daniel Micallef and Pierre Bianchi returning to the game after a 5 year absence while new player Dieter Grunwald was making his firts appearance for the club.
Lightshop Hotsticks dominated this game from start to finish using their possession tactics to the full against a depleted White Hart outfit missing several first team players. Jonathan Borg shot Hotsticks into the lead on 5 minutes but it was not until the 21st minute that Alessandro Amore pounced onto a rebound off the goalkeeper’s pads to send his team 2 – 0 up. White Hart were providing a strong defensive display but on 34 minutes Hotsticks were awarded a penalty stroke and Shawn Grima scored Hotsticks’ third from the spot. White Hart hit back when Charlo Sammut’s flick following a short corner trickled over the line on the stroke of half time leaving Hotsticks to lead 3 -1 at the end of the first half.
The second half saw a change of tactics with White Hart pushing a couple of players into midfield while Hotsticks continued to exert constant pressure down the right flank providing teasing crosses for their forwards in the centre of the D. On 41 minutes Julian Zahra grabbed Hotsticks’ fourth goal, with Borg scoring his second and his team’s fifth three minutes later. Amore scored his second on 50 minutes to send Hotsticks 6 – 1 ahead and on 68 minutes Grima shot a screamer into the top of the net sending his team into a 7 -1 victory
White Hart U14s won their 1st round match against Floriana YS by the odd goal in five. Roxane Huet scored 2 goals with the other one scored by Julie Goto. It was a close match as the score suggests but the young Reds deserve great credit for the character shown throughout. The Reds’ next match is on Saturday 7th January 2017 when they face Sliema HS.
